Cleaning the Rollers on HP Scanjet Flatbed Scanners with an ADF | HP Scanjet | HP

This video shows how to clean the ADF rollers
and separation pad on HP Scanjet Flatbed Scanners with an ADF.
The steps are demonstrated on the HP Digital Sender Flow 8500 fn1 Document Capture Workstation.
Your scanner might appear different, but the steps will be similar. Refer to your user
manual for specific instructions. Clean the rollers under any of the following
conditions: You experience repeated document jams.
The scanner does not pull pages into the paper path.
Scanned images are elongated. You frequently scan any of the following types
of documents: coated paper, chemically treated documents such as carbonless paper, documents
with a large amount of calcium carbonate, documents written with pencils, documents
on which the toner has not fused. Before you begin, gather the following cleaning
materials: Clean, lint-free cloth.
Clean, warm water. To begin, press the Power button to turn off
the scanner. Turn to the back of the scanner and disconnect
the power cord. Return to the front of the scanner.
Open the automatic document feeder, or ADF, hatch.
Remove any visible lint or dust from each of the feed rollers and the separation pad
using a clean lint-free cloth moistened with warm water.
Do not press against or adjust the alignment tabs or other components while cleaning the
rollers and separation pad. To clean the rollers, moisten a clean, lint-free
cloth with warm water. Wipe each roller with the damp cloth. Rotate
the roller with the tip of the cloth and repeat wiping it until the entire roller has been
cleaned. After cleaning each of the rollers, wipe the
separation pad with a moistened, clean, lint-free cloth.
Close the ADF hatch. You will hear it click when it is properly closed.
If your scanner is equipped with the ADF duplex background module, you will also need to clean
those rollers. Remove the ADF duplex background by pressing
the tabs on either side and sliding it out. Clean the two rollers in the enclosure with
a moistened, clean, lint-free cloth. Finally, clean the two rollers attached to
the ADF duplex background in the same manner. Slide the ADF duplex background component
back into its housing until it clicks into place.
Close the input tray. Occasionally, the paper feed rollers will
have ink or other stains that cannot be removed with warm water. In those cases you may use
isopropyl alcohol to clean the feed rollers only.
Do not use alcohol on the pick rollers or the separation pad inside the ADF.
These four feed rollers may be cleaned with a clean lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl
alcohol. You may also use a clean lint-free cloth dampened
with isopropyl alcohol to clean these four rollers, should they need it.
Turn to the back of the scanner and reconnect the power cable.
Return to the front of the scanner. Press the Power button to turn on the scanner.
Finally, you need to update the Clean Rollers counter in the scanner’s product maintenance
history. Refer to your scanner’s user manual for details
on resetting the counter. You can find additional helpful videos at
