Washer Repair- Replacing the Agitator (Whirlpool Part# 3951744)

Hi, it’s Steve from PartSelect. Today, we’re
going to show you how to change the agitator on your washer. It’s a really easy job.
All we’re going to need is a 7/16th socket with an extension and a ratchet. Let me show
how it’s done. Now the first step in this repair will be to remove the fabric softener
cup from the top of the agitator. You can pull it off and set that aside. We will be
reusing that. And there is a cap barrier and seal, just reach in and grab that two tabs
on the side and pop that out. And that will expose the 7/16’s bolt that we need to remove. Hold the base of the agitator to keep that
from turning. Loosen the bolt completely, reach in and grasp the base of the agitator
and pop it out. We’re going to reuse that bolt, so we need to drop that out, the bolt
and the rubber gasket. And discard the old agitator. Now your replacement agitator came
in several pieces, including the cam kit. We need to assemble the cam kit first, four
ratcheting dogs that slide into slots, install all of those first. You’ll notice there
is a raised side on those, those are the sides that needs to face up. Next we’re going
to install the bearing on top of that and its splined to match, or sat down into place. We need to install this in the top portion
of the agitator. We’re going to put the bearing side down, and show its centers in
the opening, now there are four slots on that holder that will lineup with the taps on the
agitator base. Slide that down, line those up, and then just reach in and press that
bearing assembly into place. Once the ratchet assembly is in place, we can reinstall the
agitator. You line it up with the agitator shaft; press it firmly all the way down. Next
we’re going to reinstall the retainer bolt. Next, we’ll replace the barrier cap and
seal, it just snaps into place. Make sure its level on both sides. Next we’ll replace
the fabric softener cup and our repair is complete. And that’s how easy it is to change
the agitator on your washer. Thanks for watching and good luck with your repair.

So, what is the trick to getting the bolt out of the top when it seems like the spline must be stripped? I can't find a way to hold any resistance against the rotation of the bolt to get it loose…if I hold the bottom of the agitator while attempting to loosen, it just slips…click….click….click…like a worn out spline. There must be 1000 videos on YouTube how to change the dogs in the top end, but nothing that I can find how to deal with this problem. Whirlpool LSR8233EQR. Thinking of looking if I can turn on its side and see if I can reach the shaft with a pipe wrench to hold it still???
