Workshop 2016 – Flanges

Instructor: Previously I have never worked with torque wrenches, but I followed a training in Germany and learned a lot. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. We are here to learn. Instructor: Would you please tighten a bolt on this measuring instrument with this torque wrench at 120 Nm (Newton meter) Participant: I would ask first: is this tool calibrated? Instructor: This is excellent, 80% of the people forget to check Participant: How many Nm was necessary? Instructor: Very good, you need to check whether the tool was without tension Instructor: Wait, wait a moment … What more needs to be checked? Instructor: Yes, lock your setting and what next? Instructor: This is what during my training in Germany happened to me… Instructor: The rotation direction is wrong, the wrench should be upside down, the bit inside needs to be put in from the other side. Instructor: The torque wrench works only in one direction Participant: … the wrench only clicks in one direction … Instructor: From groups with managers and construction leaders only 10% to 15% knows how to use a torque wrench properly Instructor: Sorry the instrument is not set in correct mode … Instructor: 131 Nm that is not bad (the setting was 120 Nm!) Participant: do you leave the setting on the torque wrench the same? Instructor: Yes, for this group we will not change it. (Some explanation about calibrating the measuring instrument) Instructor: Doesn’t it fit? (Bit is with wrong part in wrench and is reset) Participant: Now you also see how the force should/needs to be applied to the torque wrench Instructor: 122 Nm that is very good Instructor: 129 Nm Instructor: 122 Nm, this is a an excellent group Instructor: 120 Nm, unbelievable this is excellent
